Jeffry S. Pfeffer / Managing Partner
Jeff founded CapX Partners in 1999. Jeff’s responsibilities include new business development, investment committee, financial management, legal, SBIC matters and credit administration. Jeff has 23 years of experience in leasing, lending and fund management. Before CapX, Jeff was a First Vice President and managed a three-state region for Banc One Leasing Corporation. In 1995, he started his equipment leasing career by helping create American National Bank & Trust Company of Chicago's (ANB) equipment leasing business. Jeff started his career at American National Bank, where he served the financial needs of various small- to mid-sized privately owned businesses. Jeff holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Brandeis University and an master's degree in finance from DePaul University's Kellstadt Graduate School of Business. Jeff has served on the Board of the Midwest Regional Association of Small Business Investment Companies (MWRASBIC) since 2006 and is currently the region's President. Jeff is also a Member of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
James N. Hallene / Partner
Jim joined the firm in 2003 as a partner after serving as a founding investor and advisory-board member. Jim's responsibilities include investor relations, investment committee participation and new business development. He founded Capital Concepts Holdings LLC, a Chicago-based private-equity investment firm, in 1998, and serves as its principal. Before Capital Concepts, Jim co-founded and later sold the data-consolidation company, MaxMiles. For 15 years, Jim was employed at American National Bank, a subsidiary of Bank One Corporation, where he oversaw credit, cash management and technology-business units during his tenure. He now sits on the boards of MB Financial Corporation, Olsen Engineering and Resource Land Holdings. Jim earned a bachelor's degree in Finance from the University of Illinois and a master's in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Barrett D. Carlson / Partner
Barrett joined CapX Partners in 2004 with a focus on business development and investor relations. Barrett also is a co-founder in Capital Concepts Holdings LLC, a Chicago-based private-equity investment firm. Prior to CapX, Mr. Carlson founded Nineiron, LLC as a private equity investment company. He invested in several companies at this time as well as investing in real estate. Before Nineiron, he co-founded Waterstone Consulting, a management consulting and technology services firm serving manufacturers and distributors. In 1999, he led the sale of Waterstone to publicly-traded Ciber, Inc. Mr. Carlson also co-founded a supply chain software company, capitalized the company and served on its board. Mr. Carlson began his career at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) serving clients in the manufacturing and distribution group. Mr. Carlson serves on several boards, and holds a B.A. from the University of Illinois.
Eric D. Starr / Partner email Eric joined CapX in 2008 and manages the New York office. Eric has over 20 years of fund management and business development experience. He has an extensive background in developing and implementing research models designed to identify investment opportunities and manage risk. Prior to joining CapX, he managed hedge funds and was a member of the risk committee at Forest Investment Management. In 2005, his firm, Starr Capital Management was acquired by Forest. While at Starr Capital, Eric managed a multi-strategy hedge fund that focused on quantitative, non-directional strategies including Long/Short Equity, Long/Short Credit and Event Driven. Eric began his fund management career when he co-founded Aventine Investment Management in 1994. He traded currency and currency derivatives for Refco and Union Bank of Switzerland. Eric holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Brandeis University and a master's degree in finance from New York University's Stern School of Business.
